Leadership in Community and Advocacy Groups

This course will explore leadership in community and advocacy groups. Specifically, students will examine the key concepts in leadership emerging from the disability community including self-advocacy, self-determination and the dignity of risk, person-centered philosophy, and principles of inclusive leadership. They will develop an understanding of how these concepts relate to, and intersect with, concepts emerging from other movements such as restorative justice and trauma-informed care. In addition, they will gain practical insights into the day-to-day challenges of group leadership; including sustainable funding, organization staffing, collaboration with other community groups, documenting the impacts of advocacy work, and applying research and data to advance issues important to people with disabilities and their families.
